What makes Alert® different?

As with all composites, Alert® is a combination of glass fillers blended into a resin matrix. What makes Alert® revolutionary is the introduction of a unique elongated chopped glass fiber filler particle. This particle is coated with silane and silicate nanofiller and introduced into the resin matrix along with traditional fillers.

*Some of you may not approve of the word “condensable” since in fact no matter is truly condensable. However, this word best describes the tactile sense when placing the composite. Technically, amalgam is not condensed, the mercury is brought to the surface of the alloy/mercury mix.

Studies & Evaluations

Leinfelder K and Prassad A: A New Condensable Composite Resin for the Restoration of Posterior Teeth. Dentistry Today February 1999: 3p., 1999.

In this article, the authors introduce Alert® based on the study they have made of it. They identify Alert® as a condensable posterior composite resin with properties and features similar to amalgam. They also mention that Alert® has a wear resistance very similar to amalgam and much higher than other conventional composites.

Drs. Leinfelder and Prassad conclude that a composite with amalgam-like handling and properties, such as Alert®, should help to achieve success in Class II cavity preparations.



Leinfelder, Karl F.: Technical Manual On Alert® Condensable Posterior Composite Resin., January 1999.

In this document, Dr. Leinfelder refers to Alert® as a “highly packable composite” in clinical conditions and compares its handling properties to those of amalgam. He also mentions that the multiple systems included in the resin matrix of Alert® are very appropriate for posterior restorations.

Finally, Dr. Leinfelder reveals that Alert® has a very high resistance to wear, produces a very good surface texture and is easily and quickly put in place.



Sarkar, Nikhil Ph.D.: Corrosive Wear of Commercial Composite Resins., March 1999.

This study's main objective was to Evaluate the wear resistance of eleven resin composites. One of the main conclusions is that there is a great variation in wear resistance amongst the products. According to the study, Alert® is in a class by itself for its superior corrosive-wear resistance. The products belonging to the next best category are 10 to 20 times less resistant than Alert®. Alert® showed the best results with regards to resistance to both abrasive and corrosive wear.

The margin adaptation and leakage exhibited by the new condensable formulation, Alert®, was comparable to the wear resistant composite, P-50/P (3M).



Ruddell et al.: Mechanical properties and wear behavior of Condensable Composites. University of North Carolina.

The mechanical properties of condensable composites were found to be similar to a hybrid composite control. Alert® had higher values than SureFil** for diametral tensile strength, flexural strength, diamond pyramid hardness and wear, although not at a statistically significant level.

Alert® was found to have a higher diametral tensile and flexural strength than SureFil**, although not at a statistically significant level. SureFil** had a higher compressive strength than Alert®.



Kerby and al.: Fracture Toughness of Posterior Condensable Composite Resins. Ohio State University.

Alert®, a glass-fiber reinforced condensable composite resin, exhibited a significantly higher fracture toughness when compared to any of the other composite resins tested.



Kelsey et al.: Physical Properties of High Density Composite Restorative Materials. Creighton University.

All materials had statistically similar diametral tensile strength. Alert® had the highest fracture toughness and elastic modulus but had low transverse strength.

Q. Can I bulk fill large class I and class II restorations?

A. Yes! The high filler loading of Alert Condensable Composite results in about 1/3 less shrinkage when compared to conventional composite. Plus, the micro fibers effectively transmit light through the product to provide a generous 5mm depth of cure.


Q. Can I polish Alert condensable composite instead of using your surface sealant?

A. Yes, you can polish Alert Composite as you would any composite. Protect-It® Composite Sealant fills in any micro cracks, which can often result from the composite polishing process, and offers an even higher resistance to wear. Sealing the restoration also enhances marginal integrity.


Q. Why does Alert condensable composite feel so much like amalgam?

A. Special micro fibers added to the hybrid filler base creates a carefully balanced composite matrix offering high resistance to the plugging/condensing instrument. The resulting feel is very similar to amalgam with no tackiness or pullback.
